About Paine and Nooj
Paine is one of the three lead characters in the RPG FFX-2. Not much is known about her at the onset of the game, but as the story progresses, we discover that she was a photojournalist for a team of Crimson Squad hopefuls, who were later betrayed by one of their own members, Nooj. She then joined the Gullwings to search for spheres and perhaps (subconsciously) to prove Nooj's innocence, as futile as the task may be.
Nooj was one of three teammates on Paine's assigned troop. During the course of the game, he struggles against both deep depression, suffered as a result of an act of heroism that cost him his left arm and leg, and the guilt he feels for his seemingly random backstabbing of his friends. At the start of the game, Nooj is the leader of a controversial faction called the Youth League which is in direct rebellion of the time-honoured state religion, Yevon.
Why Nooj/Paine?
To me, it is quite obvious these two were meant to be together. The flashback spheres that are uncovered throughout the game reveal Paine's deep concern for Nooj's suicidal tendancies and a great respect for his leadership qualities. And while Nooj was too absorbed with his own inner demons to pay much attention to her when they first met, it is apparent that he has grown to accept her as an equal at the time the story takes place. When they first meet again after two years, he quips none-too-subtly, "Perhaps this is fate." However, you don't have to agree with me on what type of relationship these two share. This fanlisting also supports the friendship and even rivalry aspects of their relationship.
