About Auron and Rikku
Auron is one of the lead characters in the Squaresoft RPG FFX. He is the first character that Tidus comes across on his travels. Not much is known about him at the onset of the game, but as the story progresses, we discover that he was one of Yuna's father's guardians along with Tidus's father Jecht. During the entire course of the game Auron is "unsent," a solid ghost. We don't discover this until near the end, however. Auron is my favourite RPG character of all time. He is mysterious, intelligent, and a bit of a wise-ass, which is rather interesting as he used to be a devout Yevonite warrior monk. At first, I thought his character was the bad guy, but I soon discovered that he was just an aloof introverted "stiff," who has a heart of gold underneath.
Rikku is another principle player in the game. She is a spunky Al Bhed princess and, coincidently, the character introduced immediately after Auron "vanishes" toward the beginning of the game. She is an energetic young teenager who seems very sure of herself, at least until the next lightning storm! Rikku is Yuna's cousin, which is how she becomes involved in the pilgrimage to Zanarkand. She thinks Yevonites are old-fashioned and close-minded and wishes they would learn to think for themselves instead of blindly following the "teachings." Rikku is my favourite female in the game because of her upbeat attitude and the cute little dance she always does.
Why Aurikku?
To be honest, I first paired these two up as a joke. They were the remaining single characters after the canon ships (Tidus/Yuna, Lulu/Wakka). But the more I thought about it, the more the pairing made sense to me. I think these two balance each other out quite nicely. The infamous Thunder Plains scenes are an excellent case in point. Auron's reverse psychology wins the day when he pretends not to care about her fear of lightning. Auron's also the one who believed in her and defended her when she decided to be Yuna's guardian. And don't forget how they're always standing together and how Rikku dances for him! ;) Rikku could mature and learn to control her emotions with Auron's help. Auron could use her vivacity to bring him back to life and help him open up. Of course, the ship doesn't work in cannon. I always think of them in the AU sense, what could've been if Auron hadn't gone kamikaze and Rikku was just a little bit older (although traditionally in the Japanese culture, it's not unusual for a middle-aged man to marry a teenager). However, you don't have to agree with me on what type of relationship these two share. This fanlisting also supports the friendship and even rivalry aspects of their relationship.
